Autumn is a very interesting period during which hunting takes place a lot. In addition to driven hunting, many of us go to our hunting unit for individual hunting because now is the season for almost all game.
A few days ago, Hubert’s hunts took place in our hunter’s clubs, and along with them many young hunters took their oath. Now they are preparing to hunt to get their first big game.

We should consider for a moment what we can hunt for. An ideal idea seems to be a roe deer hunting, which will probably be one of the first to be found in our warrant.
What hunting method can you recommend to a young hunter? Of course, stalking! However not every stalk will be successful, because hunting a roe deer at this time of the year is not so easy even for experienced hunters, and even a small detail can affect our result. It is worth thinking about what to do to bring us the desired success.
At the very beginning, we should answer the question of why stalking and not posting. Well, by going to the stalk we can get to know the area of our hunting unit well. The most important thing is to know the boundaries of the unit beforehand and to know where the terrain of our hunting begins and ends. Anyway, it’s just as important to know the area where we hunt, because the very awareness of where the fields, forests and buildings are still not enough. We must thoroughly know the place where game live. Knowing where it goes for food, get to know its paths, passages, feeding grounds and places where we can expect it. Roe deer attaches great importance to using the same trail and game paths, so after observing their behavior for several days, you can easily deduce where and when it may appear.
We know that their daily activity cycle varies depending on the season, and thus the amount of light, but also on some safety and local conditions. Nevertheless, 10-11 periods of feeding are assumed throughout the day, with morning and evening hours being the ones that will interest us most. During autumn hunts we can often observe that roe deer are not yet connected in a group, and a doe is often accompanied by a fawn. The doe can feed her kid until December. It is worth remembering that during the hunt itself, we first obtain doe without fawn and week or sick. In the case of fawn, the principle is important – first the fawn, then the doe.
It is also important that the roe deer is attached to its area and the fact of observing it during feeding one day may be a determinant of the fact that we will meet her in this area again.
During the stalking our scent that we leave in the hunting area is very important. Stalking with the wind will not bring us success, and one scared roe deer can effectively alert the rest by enlarging the rump patch. Roe deer often use such a signal in the winter, after something like that we will only be able to dream about a venison for dinner.
I wrote about the masking of the scent some time ago on my blog in this article.
When you move around the hunting area you have to be calm, go slowly. It often happens, that we can meet deers in the least expected moment. Our stalking should not spoil the way we walk the fishery. When we encounter animals, we need to be even quieter and approach it so as to remain masked all the time, avoiding open space.

The hunt itself should end with single, accurate, safe shot. Game recognized personally, with a clean field and a natural bullet catch.
Let’s remember that the game could die without seeing a man. Let’s remember about the evergreen twig placed at hunter’s hat and respect for hunted animals. This is one of those things that distinguishes the hunter from the butcher. Culture, ethics, tradition, passion and full awareness of what we do.
What to do with a hunted roe deer? I recommend goulash, the recipe can be found here!
